Basic Finishing with Donna Arney

Many knitters are very comfortable with their ability to knit pieces of fabric, but lose their confidence when it comes to putting them together into a finished garment. In this class we will learn some very basic finishing techniques with the goal of helping participants feel comfortable progressing beyond projects like scarves and blankets.

The class will cover:

  • Mattress stitch and other seaming techniques

  • 3 Needle Bind-off

  • Weaving in ends

  • Picking up stitches

  • Kitchener stitch

If time permits we may also briefly discuss:

  • Button holes

  • Attached i-cord

  • Blocking

  • Installation of zippers 

Homework:

  • Two - 4 inch stockinette squares, bound off with 12 in tales left attached, any gauge

  • Two - 4 inch garter stitch squares, bound off with 12 in tales left attached, any gauge

  • Two - 4 inch stockinette squares, left on stitch holders or needles (not bound off), worsted weight yarn

  • Two of the following: Cast on 12 stitches, knit a few inches in stockinette, cut a tail of at least 18 inches, put on holder, Do not bind off. Gauge does not matter

  • Basically come to class with at least 8 swatches, 4 of which will be bound off and 4 will have live stitches.

Materials to Bring:

  • 1 solid color of worsted weight wool (light- No variegated or self-striping yarn) Cascade 220 or Malabrigo Worsted in a solid color work great for this class.

  • size US 6 or 7 needles, needles can be straights or circulars, but also bring dpns please.

  • Knitting Needles sized appropriate for live stitch swatches.

  • Tapestry Needle

  • Scissors
